Diabetes and cancer are 2 common severe chronic diseases that lead to many deaths. A relationship between the 2 has been proposed. There are many studies that have discussed the relationship, but a comprehensive explanation of the relationship in the literature is lacking, especially regarding diabetes mellitus and incident gastroenteric cancer. In this paper, we integrate a number of relevant studies, and summarize the relationship between diabetes mellitus and incident gastroenteric cancer. By considering the literature, we come to the conclusion that diabetes mellitus increases the risk of gastroenteric cancer. The mechanism is unclear at present, so many experts put forward their own assumptions. The most important assumption is that insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels are involved, which could stimulate cell growth.
